Do you love the idea of supporting clean energy, but rooftop solar is not in the cards for you? Green Energy Justice Cooperative (GEJC) is the answer. Whether you live in an apartment, have a shady roof or a complicated roofline, or don’t want to pay the upfront cost of panels, community solar saves you money without the hassle. For a one-time $25 membership fee (or just $5 for low and moderate income households) you become a shareholder in two solar arrays on top of two warehouses in Aurora. With your solar subscription, you can expect to see around the equivalent of 20% savings on the supply portion of your ComEd bill.
To learn more about how the cooperative model for community solar works, check out the Citizens Utility Board’s (CUB) article on GEJC. CUB, a trusted consumer advocate for everyone in Illinois who pays a utility bill, has been a strong supporter of this project because of the many added benefits to ratepayers. “This is Illinois’s first community-owned solar cooperative, providing more tangible benefits to community members. Members of the cooperative will be able to vote on decisions, attend member meetings, receive profit-sharing distributions, and gain access to educational resources.”
