Description:
This project aims to empower high school students to speak up about climate issues and advocate for environmental changes. Our first goal is to promote a bill that will make plug-in solar, an inexpensive yet effective form of solar energy, more accessible. Plug-in solar can offset the energy usage and cost of household appliances and vampire devices, also known as phantom loads, which are electronics that consume electricity even when they are turned off. Plug-in solar is also cheaper and easier to install than rooftop solar, making it a great option for renters and low-income households.
We are asking everyone, students and adults, to sign our petition to ask your state representative and senator to support legislation to legalize plug-in solar. It only takes a minute and can make a real difference. Thank you.
Want to do more to support climate policies? While simultaneously advocating for this bill, like-minded high school students are encouraged to come together and speak up about other environmental challenges in their society.
As committee members, students will work as a team to advocate for the bill and increase awareness. Flexibility for these tasks will vary based on availability and preferences, yet here are some goals we hope to accomplish as a team:

Reaching Out to Respective Government Representatives
We will be emailing our state Representatives and Senators to ask them to co-sponsor the plug-in solar bill.
If we do not get a response, we will plan to call or meet with them.
We will also teach people how to look up who their elected officials are and create an email template for others to use to contact their Representative and Senator.
Additionally, using our petition, we will be emailing certain senators on behalf of the signatories.
Creating flyers and in-school involvement
As one of our main goals is to increase involvement among high school students, we encourage you to create flyers supporting our cause and gain in-school involvement through informational slideshows.
NEST Presentation
As one of our main community events, we hope to present at NEST (Naperville Environmental and Sustainability Task Force) on the third Monday April. This will help broaden our impact and reach adults as well.

These are the current ideas we have in store; however, more opportunities will be available once we work together as a group. Please fill out the form linked below as soon as possible if you are interested in being part of the Solar EmPOWERment Team.
